Milan have confirmed that manager Stefano Pioli has tested positive for coronavirus.
Many of the Rossoneri players are currently away on international duty, with Pioli testing positive following testing at the club’s training ground.
An official statement from the club read: “AC Milan reports that Stefano Pioli tested positive after a quick swab was carried out this morning.
“The manager, who does not show symptoms, was promptly placed in home quarantine. All other swabs carried out on the team group were negative. Today’s training has been cancelled. Subject to the monitoring required by the federal protocol, the team will resume the training program ahead of the match against Napoli on Monday afternoon.”
Milan have found a new lease of life under Pioli, enjoying a superb start to the 2020/21 campaign following a strong end to last season.
The Rossoneri’s significant upturn in form with Pioli at the helm convinced the Milan hierarchy to ditch plans to hire Ralf Rangnick and instead reward the former Fiorentina boss with a two-year extension back in July.
Milan currently sit two points clear at the top of the Serie A table after seven games, but Pioli won’t be travelling for next weekend’s clash at third-placed Napoli.
Elsewhere, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) have confirmed that Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic has also tested positive for the virus.
“The test results showed two positive results, for the national team member Marcelo Brozovic and a staff member of the national team,” a statement read (via Goal). “Both were immediately isolated from the other members of the national team. Inter were informed of the positive test.”
Brozovic’s result arrives after Croatia defender Domagoj Vida returned a positive test in Istanbul on Wednesday – being informed midway through his side’s 3-3 draw with Turkey.
Nevertheless, Brozovic joins the likes of Milan Skriniar, Alessandro Bastoni, Achraf Hakimi and Roberto Gagliardini, who have all missed games for Inter this season due to coronavirus.
The 27-year-old is set to miss the Nerazzurri’s clash with the struggling Torino on Sunday.
